Erelu Ngozi Appointed United Nations Ambassador, Expanding Nigeria’s Gender and Humanitarian Engagement

Osun State’s first lady, Erelu Ngozi Abeni Adeleke, has been appointed as the ambassador to the United Nations for peace-a development which places the governor’s wife in the frontline of international humanitarian and advocacy work. The appointment announced by UN Women Nigeria and other UN bodies raises Adeleke’s profile from national public service to an international platform focused on gender equality, women’s empowerment, and humanitarian relief.

Adeleke has for many years been an active feminist advocate and policy reformer, and her biography underlines a career spanning over two decades in the banking sector, having managed institutions such as Societe Generale Bank, FIN Bank, UBA, and Union Bank before retiring from active service in 2018 to support her husband’s political career. Her transition from finance to philanthropy and public service culminates in a role that typically is representative of UN initiatives, coordinates with member states, and promotes programs aimed at improving maternal health, education for girls, and the protection of vulnerable families.

Born August 28, 1973, Adeleke graduated with a B.Sc. in Psychology from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, and an MBA in Advertising and Public Relations from Imo State University. Her professional journey has been complemented by recognitions from various bodies, including a 2023 Award of Recognition from International Breweries PLC as part of the Sixty Million Naira Empowerment Initiative and Kickstart Awards, the 2023 Excellent Award from the Resident Doctors of Osun State University Teaching Hospital for her dedication to women, children, and youth, and a 2023 World Royal Award designation as the World’s Most Iconic Exuberant Woman.

But within Osun State circles, Adeleke is known as the founder of the Esther Adeleke Humanitarian Foundation and carries a ceremonial title as Erelu Soludero of Erinmo Kingdom and Oke-Ila. Her signature cause has been families with multiple births, where she has facilitated financial support, medical care, and emotional assistance, covering medical bills and attending to various sets of twins and triplets. The newly minted UN ambassador has also been recognized for her broader contributions to youth development and girl-child education through her ongoing engagement in policy advocacy and humanitarian activities.

Observers say the appointment locates Adeleke’s public service trajectory in international diplomacy, bringing about an expansion of cross-border collaborations and resource mobilization for the country’s gender-focused programs. Formal induction into the UN ambassadorial role involves ongoing consultations with relevant UN agencies, government partners, and civil society organizations in aligning her initiatives within global frameworks on women’s rights, health systems strengthening, and sustainable development goals. Officials of the UN Women Nigeria and allied agencies confirmed the posting, ensuring a smooth rollout of duties and responsibilities in line with the UN’s regional and global agendas. The appointment represents a landmark moment in the history of state leadership meeting international humanitarian leadership within the region.
