NLC members picket Labour Party headquarters, ask Abure to resign

Top officials and members of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) on Wednesday picketed the headquarters of the party the headquarters of Labour Party (LP)in the Utako area of Abuja in continuation of the struggle with Julius Abure-led leadership of the party.

Members of the Political Commission of NLC led by Theophilus Ndubuaku, demanded the immediate resignation of Abure as the national chairman of the party during the picketing.

They claimed that Abure was not properly elected as the national chairman of the Labour Party.

The NLC and the leadership of the Labour Party have been at loggerheads over the convention of the party.

NLC had asked Abure to postpone the convention scheduled for next week, but he has resisted the move.

Consequently, the NLC National Political Commission and the leadership of the Congress State Councils and State Political Committees had after a virual meeting yesterday 19th of March 2024 agreed to picket the Labour Party headquarters.

They also agreed that offices of Labour Party across all the states in Nigeria should also be pickted.

At the meeting, it was agreedas follows:

“That given the intransigence of the National Chairman of the Labour Party to unilaterally hold a National Convention of the Labour Party, financial rascality and contempt for the leadership of the NLC, the NLC State Councils and State Political Committees should mobilise workers to picket all the State Secretariats of the Labour Party, scheduled for Wednesday, 20th March 2024.

“In view of the soon to be held all-inclusive national convention of the Labour Party, the NLC State Councils and the NLC Political Committees should immediately embark on a statewide mobilisation of workers to join the LC Political Commission and the Labour Party.

“The NLC State Council and State Political Committees should work with our civil society allies, students, traders and professionals to ensure that the picketing and mobilisation are successfully executed.
