Civil servants in Lagos have expressed various opinions on Friday regarding the food discount markets launched by the Lagos State Government to reduce hardship in the state.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu inaugurated the ‘Ounje Eko’ markets to provide residents with discounted prices on essential items.
He mandated the markets to commence operations starting Sunday, March 17, across the state.
But the food market also held at the Lagos State Secretariat, Alausa – specifically at the Adeyemi Bero Auditorium premises, for civil servants.
Mrs. Okoro, a staff member of the Lagos State Ministry of Land Bureau, commented, “The prices are reasonable, but regarding eggs, it would be better if we could purchase more than one crate without queuing again, which is stressful.”
Another civil servant, Mr. Ibrahim from the Lagos State Ministry of Works, remarked, “The prices are fair, but there is room for improvement in the payment process. Today’s payment process was too stressful. For instance, the section for purchasing bread had only one POS machine. If there were more, it would reduce the stress. Nonetheless, it’s a commendable initiative.”
Mrs. Wunmi Olaleye from the Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) expressed her satisfaction with the affordability of the prices but suggested better organization for next market.
Similarly, another civil servant, Mrs. Biodun, emphasized the need for improved orderliness due to the large crowd.
Kemi Ogunyemi, Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Health, lauded the programme, highlighting the significant price reduction in eggs.
She noted that while not everyone could purchase due to voucher limitations, the initiative would continue on Sundays, benefitting all Lagos government employees interested in the food initiative.
According to Ogunyemi, the response from the public has been appreciative, acknowledging the significant savings facilitated by the government. The food markets are scheduled to operate every Sunday at designated primary health centers, schools, and halls.
