One Nasir Idris has been sentenced to 15 months imprisonment for stealing a fan and praying mat from a mosque at Dei-Dei area of Abuja.

Idris was arraigned before A Dei-Dei Grade I Area Court, Abuja, for contravention of the Penal Code of the FCT.

The prosecutor, Mr Chinedu Ogada, told the court that one Ali Zuma arrested Idris on March 17 and took him to the police at Zuba, also in the FCT.

Ogada said the suspect trespassed on the mosque at Dei-Dei and stole the fan and mat, but was caught in the act.

He added that Idris admitted to the crime during investigation and confessed to have been in prison twice also for theft.

Idris pleaded guilty to the charge and begged the court for leniency.

However, the court sentenced him to 15 months in jail with an option to pay a N50,000 fine.

Pronouncing the judgment, the presiding judge, Mr Saminu Suleiman warned him to desist from committing crimes and to be of good behaviour.
