A rare earthquake has struck New Jersey, causing buildings to shake in New York City and its surrounding regions.

According to the United States Geological Survey, the quake measured a magnitude of 4.8, with its epicenter located just northeast of Whitehouse Station, New Jersey.

The tremor briefly interrupted a UN Security Council meeting on Gaza at its New York headquarters.

In Brooklyn, buildings experienced shaking, causing cupboard doors and fixtures to rattle.

The earthquake occurred around 10:20 local time (15:20 GMT), with no reports of significant damage.

On social media, users from Philadelphia to New York and along the eastern coast reported feeling the quake.
