Implementation of new minimum wage begins today - FG

The Federal Government has told Nigerian workers that the implementation of the new minimum wage will take effect from today May 1, 2024.

The Minister of State for Labour, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, revealed this on Wednesday while addressing Nigerian workers at the May Day celebration at Eagle Square in Abuja.

She said the implementation of the new wage will take off even though the Tripartite Committee set up to decide on the new amount to be paid is yet to conclude its negotiations

Onyejeocha who regretted that the new national minimum wage is not ready before today noted that a wide consultation is ongoing to ensure that the document is out together as soon as possible.

Also speaking at the event, President Tinubu commended Nigerian workers for their contributions to the growth of the country.

Tinubu, in his address to the workers presented by Vice President Kashim Shettima at an event to mark the 2024 Workers’ Day in Abuja added that the Federal government is open to receiving the recommendations of the committee on the new national minimum wage.

The President also assured that his reform agenda of the current administration is geared towards the progress of Nigeria.

Recall that the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have demanded N615,000 as the new minimum wage, up from the current N30,000 as the new minimum wage for workers in the country.

They also argued that the current minimum wage expired in April, five years after the Minimum Wage Act of 2019 was signed by former President Muhammadu Buhari.
