Police in Kano have arrested 52-year-old Hamisu Mamuda while trying to smuggle 12 nylon bags of dry leaves suspected to be Indian Hemp into Kurmawa Correctional Centre, Kano.

Police operatives have also busted the drug cartel of the most wanted drug dealer in the ancient commercial city of Kano, popularly known as Badoo, arresting him alongside eight of his boys.

The spokesperson of Kano state Police Command, Superintendent of Police, Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, who gave the hint on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Mohammed Usaini Gumel, said all the suspects are currently in police dragnet as they would be transferred to the Kano Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) upon completion of investigation.

Hamisu was nabbed on April 27, 2024, during his failed attempt to sell the illicit drugs to inmates of the Kurnawa Correctional Service.

He hails from Samegu Quarters, Kumbotso Local Government Area, Kano State.

The 12 nylon bags of dried leaves suspected to be Indian Hemp was wrapped in his jacket.

Police also arrested one Sadam Mu’azu, popularly known as “Badoo” aged 33 years, of Tukuntawa Quarters in Kano Metropolis having received reports of public outcry by Tukuntawa Quarters Kano and adjoining communities over his activities of receiving supply of illicit drugs and cannabis especially from the eastern parts of the country and distributing them to youths, including house wives.

Saddam has been in the wanted list of the police for long as part of the bid to curtail illicit drugs and related criminal cases in Kano.

According to Kiyawa, “the arrest was made was as a result of painstaking surveillance and community partnership initiative of the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Mohammed Usaini Gumel, who instructed dedicated teams of detectives led by Officer-in-Charge of Anti Daba Unit of the Command, SP Hussaini Gimba in conjunction with DPO Sharada Division, CSP Bilyaminu Bello to ensure the arrest of the suspect with all his associates.

“This dedication led to his arrest on the 22nd April, 2024, and eight other members of his network.

“Exhibit recovered include 11 parcels of dried leaves suspected to be Indian Hemp, a cutlass, five motorcycles that are being used or sales and distribution facilities.

“The sum of N111,500:00 in different denominations suspected to be proceeds of crime was also recovered. Meanwhile, all the suspects made confessions on their dealings in buying and selling of the drugs and including Indian Hemp.”

Kiyawa added that, “the suspect also confessed to the crime and is currently cooling his feet at the Command’s Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for discreet investigation.

“At the completion of investigation all the suspects will be charged to court.”

The Commissioner of Police, Mr. Gumel, appreciated the community partnership team-work for the successes recorded in the arrest and investigation of “Badoo” and his accomplices.

He also commended the personnel of Kurmawa Correctional Centre for a job well done in ensuring the safety of the inmates.
