The Nigerian Thoracic Society (NTS) has advocated for better resources and support for individuals with asthma in Nigeria and all over the world.

The NTS, in a statement to mark the World Asthma Day on Tuesday, 7 May, 2024 said by raising awareness and pushing for policies that prioritized asthma management, significant impact could be made on the lives of those affected by this condition.

The World Asthma Day is an annual event dedicated to raising awareness about asthma and its impact on individuals worldwide. It is observed on the first Tuesday of May each year and serves as a reminder to educate and support those affected by this chronic respiratory condition.

The statement signed by NTS President, Prof M. Babashani and the Secretary General, Dr Abiona Odeyemi, said this year’s theme, “Asthma education empowers,” encouraged individuals to take control of their asthma and improve their quality of life.

“It also highlights the importance of educating individuals on how to properly manage their asthma symptoms and prevent asthma attacks. By empowering individuals with the knowledge and skills to manage their asthma, we can help improve their quality of life and reduce the burden of this chronic respiratory disease.

“The importance of raising awareness about asthma and educating the public cannot be understated. Asthma is a common condition that affects millions of people worldwide, yet many individuals may not have access to the necessary information and resources to effectively manage their symptoms.

“By promoting awareness and education, we can help individuals better understand their condition, recognize triggers, and take proactive steps to prevent exacerbations. Ultimately, by empowering individuals with the tools they need to manage their asthma, we can work towards improving overall health outcomes and reducing the impact of asthma on individuals’ daily lives,” the NTS stated.

The statement added that the NTS is a professional organization dedicated to improving the respiratory health of individuals in Nigeria, saying that with a focus on conditions such as asthma, the society aims to provide education, resources, and support to both healthcare providers and patients.

In addition to education and advocacy, the society also strives to promote early detection and proper management of asthma to prevent long-term complications and improve the overall quality of life for patients.

“We seek to empower individuals with asthma to take control of their health and well-being through self-care and informed decision-making. Ultimately, the society’s mission is to reduce the burden of asthma on individuals and the healthcare system in Nigeria, and to create a healthier and more supportive environment for those living with the condition,” the society said.

The NTS explained that efforts in promoting asthma education and treatment had led to increased awareness and accessibility to necessary medications and tools for managing the condition.

In addition, the body stated that by advocating for better policies and funding for asthma research, the society is helping to improve the overall quality of care for those affected by the disease.

“With a focus on prevention and early intervention, we are empowering individuals to take control of their asthma and live healthier, more fulfilling lives. Together, we are making a difference in the lives of thousands of Nigerians who suffer from asthma.
