The National Working Committee of the Labour Party has said the suspension of its National Chairman, Julius Abure, by the  Edo State chapter of the party is illegitimate.

The Labour Party at the level of  Ward 3, Arue, Uromi, Esan North East Local Government Area of Edo State  had said it was suspending Abure with immediate effect over allegations of high handedness, anti-party activities, fraud.

The state chapter had also ratified the decision.

But the NWC in a statement by the National Publicity Secretary of the party,  Obiora Ifoh, said that Article 17 Subsection 1 of the 2019 constitution of the Labour Party says  that  only a national convention of the party with a  two-thirds majority  votes can suspend or remove the national chairman., “The ward, LG or even the state have no power to suspend the National Chairman. Besides, an Edo High Court and Appeal Court had also ruled on this matter.

“This dimension is a continuation of the attack on the person of Abure as witnessed during the governorship primaries. It will also amount to nothing and we are not perturbed,” he said.
