Former chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ibrahim Lamorde has died at the age of 61.

Lamorde died on Sunday morning in Egypt, where he had gone for medical treatment. The cause of his death is unknown.

His death was confirmed by close associates and the EFCC.

Born 20 December 1962, Lamorde was appointed Acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on 23 November 2011 after chairman Farida Waziri had been dismissed by President Goodluck Jonathan.

He was confirmed as Chairman by the Senate on 15 February 2012.

On 9 November 2015, former President Muhammadu Buhari sacked Lamorde, replacing him with Ibrahim Magu as the new EFCC chairman.

When the EFCC was created in 2003, headed by Nuhu Ribadu, Lamorde was made Director of Operations after Tiyamiyu Oluwagbemiga retired as the pioneer Director of Operations and Strategy in 2006.
