Reverse Emirate Law, Kano South elders tell Yusuf

Gov Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State

The Kano South Elders Forum has urged Gov. Abba Yusuf to urgently reverse the decision on the Kano Emirate Law, which they say has hindered progress and development in the region.

The chairman of the forum, Alhaji Musa Doguwa, made the appeal during a news conference in Kano on Wednesday.

Doguwa praised the upgrade of the new emirates in southern Kano under former governor, Dr Abdullahi Ganduje, saying it brought about urbanisation, infrastructure expansion, and prosperity to the affected areas.

They said the new emirates, namely, Gaya, Rano, and Karaye have a rich historical background and represent a significant percentage of Kano state.

The elders decried the decision to amend the emirate law, which they said stripped them of their heritage and potential for growth.

They commended some members of Kano State House of Assembly for their support and urged others to align with them.

Gov. Abba Yusuf had on May 23 signed the amended Emirate bill (2024) into law, thereby repealing the 2019 law that created four additional emirates by former governor, Abdullahi Ganduje.

There has been unrest in the state since the signing of the controversial law that deposed Emir Ado Bayero and reinstated Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II.
