The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, has said that the 21 September 2024 governorship election in Edo will go on as planned, despite the recent flood disaster that damaged some facilities at the Benin office of the Commission.
He disclosed this on Thursday in Benin, when he visited the State to ascertain the level of damage to the facilities.
The flood, amongst others, destroyed some voter enrollment machines already configured for the ongoing continuous voter registration (CVR).
The INEC Chairman who promised to replace the damaged facilities before the election, however, pose said they pose no threat to the ongoing CVR and election.
According to him, “We will assess what we need to do so that we will respond appropriately.
“For the Edo election, we can rely on our resources from neighboring States to ensure there are no issues because INEC is one national body.
“The present Commission has enough experience in conducting governorship election in Edo State… This is the third since 2016,” he stated.
Meanwhile, Prof. Mahmood has lauded the turnout of applicants for the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) in the State.
Mahmood who stated this when he visited some centers of the ongoing CVR, noted that the exercise has witnessed fresh registrants, application for transfer and collection of Permanent Voters Card (PVC).
