Maximilian Wober scored an own goal to help France labour to 1-0 victory against hard-fighting Austria in their opening match at Euro 2024 in Germany.

Wober put the ball in his own net 38 minutes into the game. Wober, who tried to clear a cross into the six-yard box but headed the ball behind his own keeper.

Earlier in the ninth minute, Patrick Pentz was forced into action to thwart Kylian Mbappe. He found himself some space after latching on to a pass and unleashed a shot to the bottom left corner but could not beat the keeper.

In the 62nd minute Marcel Sabitzer went down under a challenge in the box, but the referee immediately wove away the appeals from all players.

In the 68th minute, Marcus Thuram received a precise pass and was given time inside the box to send a low strike towards the middle of the goal. Patrick Pentz guessed his intention and denied him with a fine save.
