Rivers reveals date for Local Government elections

RSIEC-510×340

By Paul Dada

The Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) has scheduled local government elections in the state to hold on October 5, this year.

This is coming amid the crisis in the state over the sacking of  the 23 former local government chairmen by Governor Siminalayi Fubara who insists that  their tenure has ended.

Most of the LG chairmen however, maintain theta they were unjustly removed as the Martins Amaewhule-led Rivers State of House Of Assembly had made a law to extend their time in office by six months.

Fubara who believes the law was null and void went on to inaugurate caretaker committees to handle the affairs of the Local Government Areas pending the election.

The Police have however taken over all the LG secretarial until the issue is resolved by the judiciary.
