On Friday, the leader of the Labour Party, Keir Starmer became the Prime Minister-Elect of the United Kingdom after an his party won an overwhelming majority of the seats in the House of Commons.
Here are eight things to know about the the UK PM-elect.
1. Starmer was born on 2 September 1962 in Southwark, London but grew up in Oxted, Surrey. He was the second of the four children of his parents.
2. He studied law at the University of Leeds, where he graduated with first class honours and a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree in 1985. He undertook postgraduate studies Law at the University of Oxford.
3. Starmer served as the editor of Socialist Alternatives, a Trotskyist radical magazine, between 1986 and 1987.
4. Starmer became a barrister in 1987 at the Middle Temple. He became a bencher there in 2009. He was also called to the bar in several Caribbean countries. He was a notable human rights lawyer.
5. In July 2008, he became the head of the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) and Director of Public Prosecutions.
6. Starmer was elected for the first time as member, House of Commons in 2015.
7. He was elected leader of the Labour Party on 4 April 2020.
8. Starmer is married to Victoria who practises Judaism. They have a son and a daughter.
