'How troops foiled Boko Haram attempt to destroy electricity towers in Yobe'

Troops of the Nigerian Army working with hunters have foiled another attempt to throw Yobe State into darkness by Boko Haram insurgents through destruction of electricity towers in Kasesa community, near Damaturu, the state capital.

Acting Assistant Director, Army Public Relations Headquarters of the sector, Capt. Naziru Shehu, disclosed this in a statement in Damaturu on Sunday.

According to him, the attempt by the Boko Haram insurgents was foiled by troops of Sector 2 Joint Task force, North-East Operation Hadin Kai in collaboration with hunters groups in the state on Saturday.

Shehu said the terrorists were forced to abandon their vehicle already prepared Improvised Explosive Devices (IED), detonating cables, two damaged tyres as well as trade test card/certificate after they came under heavy fire from the troops.

He said combined troops of Combat Team (CT) 7 of 27 Task Force Brigade conducted the operation after receiving credible intelligence on the planned sabotage.

“ On receipt of credible intelligence of BHT activities, troops swiftly laid a successful ambush on the terrorists.

“ The terrorists abandoned a Toyota Corolla, 8 prepared Improvised Explosive Devices (IED), detonating cables, 2 damaged tyres as well as trade test card/certificate after the troops brought heavy volume of fire on them,” Shehu said.

The spokesman said the Chief of Army Staff, Lt.- Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja and Theatre Commander, Joint Task Force Operation Hadin Kai, Maj.- Gen. W Shaibu, have commended the residents for their cooperation.

He urged the public to remain vigilant and always provide credible information to the security agencies on the movements of suspected persons in the areas.
