Seun Kuti, Grammy nominee and the last child of Afrobeat legend Fela has revealed that he does not take marijuana but weed.
The singer, in a recent interview with popular content creator, Timi Agbaje, argued there is a difference between weed and marijuana.
He claimed the weed he smokes is not marijuana because it contains “local leaves and herbs”.
Kuti said he cannot be arrested under the NDLEA Act because there is no evidence against him while disclosing he promotes marijuana legalisation.
“I don’t take marijuana but I take weed,” he said.
“Weed are local leaves and herbs. Yes, I do… I believe it should be against the law but there is no evidence that I have broken the law.
“You see me smoking something online. How do you know what I am smoking? I could be smoking captain black or roll ups tobacco.
“There are so many things I could be smoking. Were you there when I was? Did you see anything with your eyes?
“… I can say weed, I even have a shirt that promotes it. I’m an advocate of legalising marijuana all over the world. I’m an advocate, for that I stand.”
According to a study, Marijuana and weed are the same and are used interchangeably. Marijuana is a mind-alerting substance that comes from the Cannabis sativa plant. However, other names for marijuana include weed, pot and dope.
The possession of cannabis is illegal and is punishable by a minimum sentence of 12 years in prison. In serious trafficking cases, life imprisonment may be imposed.
