Cholera outbreak: Lagos Metro Lions Club cleans up Ipodo community

To tackle environmental and public health issues, the Lagos Metropolitan Lion Club has teamed up with the Ipodo community in Ikeja for a cleanup outreach on Thursday.

This outreach focused on cleaning and sanitizing local drainage systems, fumigating the area, and donating essential cleaning materials to mitigate the risks of cholera and raise community awareness.

The initiative was led by the current president of the club, Lion Victor Aylor, NLCF.

Key Lion Club members in attendance included Andrew Onoja, Marketing and Communication Chairperson; Jennifer Onwuta, Immediate Past President; Franklin Udah, Charter President; Collins Osian, Service Chairperson, and other members of the club.

Lion Franklin Udah, the Charter President noted the importance of the outreach, stating,

“This is an environmental activity and purposefully, it is to clean up the environment.

“As we know it is rainy season and there is incessant flooding around Lagos State, so we deemed it fit to at least clean up the environment, the drainages; make it flowable at the same time, fumigate it, and keep the environment healthy.”

Lion Jennifer Onwuta, the Immediate Past President of Lagos Metropolitan Lion Club, stressed the educational aspect of the initiative.

“We are on a mission to kick against illegal dumping of refuse in the gutter and also educate the community about the ongoing cholera outbreak and how to prevent it going forward.

“We are here in this locality to show them by example how to keep the environment clean to prevent the outbreak.”

Chief Lateef Yusuf Apena, the Otun Oba of the Ipodo Community, expressed his gratitude for the Lion Club’s efforts.

“The Lagos Metropolitan Lion Club has been able to complement the efforts of the state in terms of environmental cleanliness in Lagos. I have known them for so long.

“They are doing a great job. I would implore them to continue with their good work.

“They are still coming to organize empowerment projects in this community and also renovating the public toilet.”
