An Ogun High Court sitting in Abeokuta has restricted the #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria nationwide protests scheduled to begin today, 1 August to four locations across the three senatorial districts of the state.
The locations are: MKO Stadium, Abeokuta; Ansar-ud-Deen Comprehensive High School, Ota; Remo Divisional High School, Sagamu; and Dipo Dina Stadium, Ijebu-Ode.
The court, presided over by Justice Olugboyega Ogunfowora consequently prohibited protesters and organizers from gathering anywhere outside the four approved venues.
Justice Ogunfowora also said the protest should take place between between 8 am and 5 pm only.
The Court gave the orders while granting application of Ogun State’s Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Oluwasina Ogungbade (SAN).
According to the Court all protests under the #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria slogan or any other slogan from 1 August 2024 to 10 August 2024 must be limited in place and time.
The Court directed Ogun Commissioner of Police to enforce the order by ensuring that the protests are held only in the specified locations and during the periods stated in the order.
He declared that the order would last for seven days and ordered the State to serve the application on notice within that period.
Justice Ogunfowora also reduced the the time for the protesters to respond to the application to 72 hours while adjourning the case to 6 August 2024.
Ogungbade had in his application asked the court to limit protests to the four locations are across the four divisions of the state in the three senatorial districts. He said this will allow protesters senatorial districts to participate in the protests under adequate protection of the security agencies.
He argued that restricting the protesters will also ensure that the rights of any non-protesting members of the public are not infringed upon.
