The Dataphyte Foundation has issued a critical call for responsible governance, emphasizing the protection of digital rights and freedom of expression amid the #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria protests.

In a statement released today and signed by its Programme Director, Femi D. Amele, the foundation reiterated the crucial role of digital rights and free expression in any democracy, especially during periods of civil unrest.

The foundation criticized recent government actions involving communication clampdowns, such as internet disruptions, stressing that it has hindered the ability of citizens to organize peacefully, seek emergency assistance, and hold the government accountable.

These disruptions, according to the Dataphyte Foundation, are not only impeding democratic engagement but also exacerbating economic and social instability by disrupting businesses, education, and healthcare services.

Part of the statement read: ”Digital rights and freedom of expression are fundamental to any democracy, particularly during periods of civil unrest.

”The government must show restraint in communication clampdowns, in the form of internet disruptions, as essential services and the very fabric of democratic engagement depend on the availability of communication channels.

”Interrupting the free flow of information across digital channels undermines the ability of individuals to organize peacefully, seek help during emergencies, and hold the government accountable.

”These interruptions are also disrupting businesses, educational activities, and healthcare services, exacerbating economic and social instability.”

The Dataphyte Foundation also called on the government to maintain open and unrestricted digital communication channels, engage with citizens constructively and transparently and empower local governments.

The foundation urged all citizens to use their digital platforms responsibly, advocate for their rights, and engage in peaceful, constructive dialogue to foster democratic growth and stability.

The foundation further reiterated its commitment to supporting initiatives that enhance digital rights, freedom of expression, and good governance, aiming to contribute to a more resilient and democratic Nigeria.
