In a show of support for NNPC Group Managing Director Mele Kyari, a coalition of 92 Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) has urged President Bola Tinubu to resist efforts they claim aim to undermine Kyari’s contributions to the Nigerian economy.
The coalition, represented by the Global Centre for Conscious Living Against Corruption and led by Director General Dr. Gabriel Nwambu, held a press conference on Wednesday to detail Kyari’s achievements and defend his reputation against current allegations.
Dr. Nwambu emphasized Kyari’s significant rise within NNPC, noting that his leadership has brought transformative changes to the organization.
Under Kyari’s stewardship, NNPC has seen increased crude oil production and reserve growth, pivotal for Nigeria’s energy security and economic development.
Kyari, who began his career with NNPC in 1991, has been credited with improving operational efficiency, fostering strategic partnerships, and enhancing the company’s global standing. His efforts have also extended to expanding NNPC’s investments in renewable energy and gas development, contributing to a more sustainable energy sector.
The coalition commended Kyari’s emphasis on transparency and accountability, highlighting his commitment to eradicating corruption within NNPC. They stressed that while allegations have been made, it is essential to uphold the principle of innocence until proven guilty and to thoroughly investigate any claims.
“The achievements and contributions of Mallam Mele Kyari to NNPC and the Nigerian economy far outweigh the allegations against him,” Dr. Nwambu stated. “We urge President Tinubu to ensure that these efforts are not disrupted by unfounded claims and to support the continued good work being done at NNPC.”
The coalition’s call comes amid ongoing discussions about the integrity of NNPC’s leadership, underscoring the need for a fair and unbiased approach to any investigations.
A statement released by the colatition partly read, “Kyari has placed great emphasis on transparency and accountability, implementing robust corporate governance practices that promote integrity and foster trust among stakeholders.
“Now, let us address the allegations being made against Mallam Mele Kyari. It is crucial to reiterate that in our justice system, every individual is assumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of competent jurisdiction.
“We firmly believe in upholding the principles of due process, and any allegations should be diligently investigated and proven beyond all reasonable doubt. It is neither our place nor the media’s to pass judgment based on unproven allegations.
“It is important to note that Mallam Mele Kyari’s achievements and contributions to NNPC Limited and the Nigerian economy far outweigh the allegations made against him.”
