Police arrest 873 suspects in Kano in 10 days

…As honest commercial bus driver hands over lost bag containing large sum of money to police

No fewer than 873 suspects were arrested in Kano between August 1 and 10, 2024, including perpetrators of violence during the nationwide hunger protest in the state.

The Kano state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Salman Dogo Garba also received a lost bag containing large sum of money from a bus driver who found the bag and returned it to the police to locate the owner.

Addressing journalists at the Bompai police headquarters on Monday, the Kano police boss said he was providing updates on the recent violent incidents that resulted in wanton destruction and looting of Government and public properties in Kano State instigated by hoodlums under the guise of nationwide protest, as well as the achievements recorded by the Command in crime prevention, management and control from 1st to 10th August, 2024.

According to him, “in line with the directives of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, PhD, NPM to all Commands and Formations for ensuring professionalism and provision of Police service that is rule of law compliant, the Kano State Police Command has worked diligently and professionally towards addressing the aftermath of these events, and these efforts resulted in the arrest of 873 suspects and recovery of large quantity of exhibits.”

CP Dogo further hinted that police arrested and prosecuted 600 suspects for various offences, including criminal conspiracy, inciting disturbance, riot, theft, mischief, and arson, during the violent protest in Kano.

Police also arrested and prosecuted of 150 suspects for violating the curfew enforced by the Kano State Government, including six suspects linked with masterminding the destruction, setting ablaze and looting of the Kano Printing Press (KPP) who are currently undergoing investigation.

Police. also arrested and transferred 76 suspects flying Russian flags, including a foreigner to Force Headquarters, Abuja for discreet investigation on charges of sedition.

Police operatives in Kano also arrested 41 suspects for other major crimes including armed robbery, kidnapping, car theft, among others.

CP Dogo listed items recovered from the suspects to include: two AK-47 exhibit rifles and other substantial properties looted by the hoodlums at Audu Bako Secretariat NCC Office, High Court Complexes, Kano Printing Press (KPP), and Super Markets, across the state.

“Despite the challenges posed by the recent protest, it is important to highlight some of the achievements recorded by the Police Command in crime prevention, management, and control within the period under review.

“The Command has remained resolute and steadfast in its duty to protect the lives and properties of all residents in Kano State.

“Through proactive policing strategies and community engagement, we have successfully achieved tremendous successes within the period under review,” he stated.

The Kano police boss listed those arrested to include: two suspected kidnappers; five suspected armed robbers; eight suspected car thieves; two human trafficking suspects; one notorious drug dealer; 23 suspected thugs (Yan Daba).

Police also rescued 13 trafficking victims.

Items recovered include: two AK-47 Rifles and one Beretta Pistol; 47 live ammunition; eight motor vehicles; four sacks containing Exol Tablets; two Bajaj Boxer Motorcycles; ₦9,442,000:00 cash; 22 cows; 15 sheep, and four donkeys.

CP Dogo further stated that: “The Kano State Police Command remains committed to maintaining law and order, preventing crime, and protecting the rights of citizens to peaceful protest.

Meanwhile, in a remarkable display of honesty and integrity, a commercial motor vehicle driver has returned a lost bag containing a substantial amount of money to the Kano State Police Command.

The driver, Safiyanu Mohammed, ‘(36) is a resident of Rangaza Quarters, Ungogo Local Government Area, Kano State.

He is a driver and indigene of Katsina State.

He found the bag on Friday, 9th August 2024, at Hadejia Road by Dakata Junction, and handed it over to the Police Command.

The bag was found to contain a large sum of money, but no unique identification or contact information of the owner.

The Kano State Police Command is now calling on the rightful owner of the bag to come forward and claim their property. To facilitate the return of the bag, the owner is required to provide proof of ownership and identification.

CP Dogo commended the commercial driver for his exemplary honesty and urged anyone with information about the owner’s identity to come forward for identification and collection.
