Hope Spring partner with community for solution to clean water scarcity
Agege based sustainable development goals 6 charity, Hope Spring completed and handed over its latest clean water project on the 10th of August. The beneficiary community is the Ifedayo community, of Ifelodun local government area of Kwara State.
The clean water system is powered by an eighty metre deep borehole, which feeds a 5,000 litre tank. The tank is hosted at a height that allows gravity to feed water to taps in the fetching area.
The project took just under one month to complete. Prior to Hope Spring involvement with the project, Ifedayo community started the process to build a borehole. The community was able to fund a geo survey report and buy a water storage tank. The cost of drilling a borehole and creating a water fetching area was too much for the community purse. That was when the community, through their spokes person Comrade Ambali Abidemi reached out to Hope Spring water.
Hope Spring agreed to come onboard the project, and together the new partnership started working to find a lasting solution to Ifedayo community water challenges. The NGO along with it’s fundraising platform Hope Spring UK charity ecards started the ball rolling by engaging a leading borehole driller in Kwara State.
Overview of the borehole water system at Ifedayo community

Hope Spring Water has been instrumental in transforming the water landscape in Ifedayo, Kwara State, through its innovative borehole water systems. These systems, designed to tap into underground water reserves, have proven to be a reliable and sustainable source of clean water for the Ifedayo community.
Before the implementation of these systems, residents of Ifedayo often faced significant challenges to access safe, clean water. Members of the community who can afford it, buy water from water vendors. Those that cannot afford to pay for water, which so majority of the community rely on a stream. The stream is also used by livestock, which makes it unsuitable for human consumption.Given that most of the people at Ifedayo community do now have a choice, they drink the water. This often leads to them catching water borne illnesses.
The success of the Hope Spring borehole projects in Ifedayo can be attributed to a collaborative approach with the beneficiary community itself. This community and the Hope Spring team have worked together to ensure the effective implementation and maintenance of the borehole systems. This collaboration has resulted in a more consistent water supply, reducing the incidence of water-borne diseases and promoting better health among the population. Additionally, the reliable access to clean water has enabled the community to focus on other critical areas of development, such as education and economic activities, without the constant worry of water scarcity. The above key objectives was the reans Hope Spring was founded, according to the organisation founder Temi Odurinde.
The importance of clean sustainable water systems

Sustainable water systems are crucial for Nigeria, a country facing significant challenges related to water scarcity and contamination. With a rapidly growing population and increasing demand for water, the need for reliable and safe water sources has never been more critical. Sustainable water systems, such as boreholes, offer a viable solution by providing long-term access to clean water while minimising environmental impact as Hope Spring did at Ifedayo Community Kwara State. These systems are designed to be resilient, ensuring that communities have access to water even during periods of drought or other environmental stresses. By investing in sustainable water infrastructure, Nigeria can improve public health, reduce poverty, and support economic development.
The importance of sustainable water systems extends beyond immediate health benefits. Reliable access to clean water underpins many aspects of development, including education, agriculture, and industry. Children who have access to safe water are more likely to attend school regularly, as they are less prone to water-borne illnesses. Farmers can irrigate their crops more effectively, leading to increased agricultural productivity and food security. Furthermore, industries that depend on water for their operations can function more efficiently, contributing to economic growth. In this way, sustainable water systems play a pivotal role in the overall progress and stability of Nigeria.
Hope Spring water quality and safety standards
Hope Spring Water, an NGO dedicated to improving access to clean water in Nigeria, places a strong emphasis on water quality and safety standards. Ensuring that the water provided through borehole systems is safe for consumption is a top priority. Hope Spring Water employs rigorous testing and monitoring protocols to guarantee that the water meets international safety standards. This includes regular testing for contaminants such as bacteria, heavy metals, and other pollutants that could pose health risks. By maintaining high water quality standards, Hope Spring Water ensures that communities can trust the safety of their water supply, thereby reducing the incidence of water-related diseases.
In addition to stringent testing, Hope Spring Water also invests in the training and education of local water managers. These individuals are equipped with the knowledge and skills necessary to maintain and monitor the borehole systems, ensuring that they continue to operate efficiently and safely. This approach not only enhances the sustainability of the water projects but also empowers local communities to take ownership of their water resources. By fostering a sense of responsibility and involvement, Hope Spring Water helps to create a culture of water safety and sustainability that benefits the entire community.
- Community involvement and Education

Community involvement is a cornerstone of successful water projects, and this is especially true in Ifedayo, Kwara State. Engaging the local community in the planning, implementation, and maintenance of borehole water systems ensures that the projects meet the specific needs of the residents. Community members are encouraged to participate in every stage of the project, from site selection to construction and ongoing maintenance. This inclusive approach fosters a sense of ownership and accountability, which is crucial for the long-term sustainability of the water systems. When communities are actively involved, they are more likely to take care of the infrastructure and use the water resources responsibly.
Education is another critical component of sustainable water management. Hope Spring Water working in Ifedayo invests heavily in educating the community about the importance of clean water and proper sanitation practices. Educational programs are designed to raise awareness about the health benefits of clean water and the risks associated with contaminated water. These programs also teach practical skills, such as how to maintain the borehole systems and how to use water efficiently. By empowering community members with knowledge and skills, these initiatives help to ensure that the benefits of the borehole projects are fully realised and sustained over time.
You too can support a clean water project
Supporting sustainable borehole projects in Nigeria can be done in various ways, each contributing to the overall success and longevity of these vital initiatives. One of the most effective ways to support these projects is through financial contributions. Donations can help fund the drilling of new boreholes, the maintenance of existing ones, and the education and training programs that are essential for Hope Spring Water, offer opportunities for individuals and businesses to sponsor specific projects or contribute to general funds. These contributions make a tangible difference in providing communities with reliable access to clean water.
Hope Spring is also raising funds through charity eCards to build sustainable borehole water systems in Nigeria. These eCards, perfect for any occasion, help provide clean and safe water to communities in need. Each donation you make on the Hope Spring eCards platform contributes directly to the drilling and maintenance of boreholes, transforming lives by ensuring access to reliable water sources.. You can contact Hope Spring water via their website, social media pages or by directly sending them an email.
