Nigerian Highlife singer Flavour has opened up about his musical identity in an interview, addressing whether he can be classified as an Afrobeats artiste.
When asked how he feels about not being mentioned among top Afrobeats artistes, Flavour shared a witty and thought-provoking response.
Flavour stated that his music is simply “African” music, which could naturally be categorized under Afrobeats. However, he stressed that the African entertainment industry needs to diversify beyond the Afrobeats genre, which has been dominating the spotlight.
He argued that focusing solely on Afrobeats limits the African music industry’s growth and diversity.
According to Flavour, Afrobeats should be recognized as a part of a broader musical spectrum rather than the sole representative of African music.
In the interview, Flavour also named some of his top African artistes, with Tanzanian star Diamond Platnumz at the top of his list.
Flavour’s comments quickly sparked a debate online, with many netizens expressing their support.
One user, kelvin_kertz, stated, “Flavour is up there when it comes to consistency. If he was Yoruba or deep in Lagos music industry, bro would be at Wiz, David, Olamide level.”
Another user, evelvn, shared, “Let’s stop trying to put all our artistes inside one box ‘Afrobeats.’ We have other beautiful genres. Tired of this whole Afrobeats discourse. Flavour isn’t Afrobeats.”
