Marcel Leijzer, Manager of Technical Cooperation at United Nations Tourism (UN Tourism), has  lauded Nigerians for their exceptional hospitality following his recent visit to Ekiti State.

In a statement to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Leijzer described the welcoming nature of Nigerians as “incredibly amazing” and capable of greatly boosting tourism.

Leijzer’s visit, which took place from August 17 to August 22, involved a comprehensive assessment of over 20 tourism sites across Ekiti State.

His tour included popular landmarks such as the Ekiti Parapo War Museum in Okemesi-Ekiti, the Ikogosi Warm Spring, and Mount Golgotha in Efon-Alaye-Ekiti.

Other highlights included the palm tree with 42 heads in Ilogbo-Ekiti, the first mass center in Usi-Ekiti, and the sacred Olosunta Rock in Ikere-Ekiti.

Throughout his journey, Leijzer was impressed by the diverse and captivating sites, which ranged from historical and cultural landmarks to natural wonders like dramatic rock formations and unique waterfalls.

He noted the state’s fascinating festivals, stating that it seems “there is hardly a week without one or two celebrations.”

“This visit to Ekiti was nothing short of amazing,” Leijzer remarked. “The natural beauty, combined with the warmth and friendliness of the people, is unparalleled. I have been to 55 countries, and I have never encountered such naturally beautiful attractions.

“Our goal is to deliver technical cooperation and build capacity within the Ekiti State Bureau of Tourism,” Leijzer explained. “We will also utilize our social media platforms to promote Ekiti as a prime tourism destination and provide guidance on sector grooming.”

In a personal note, Leijzer shared his enjoyment of Nigerian cuisine, particularly Fufu and pounded yam, and praised the abundance of seafood available.

“I’m also fascinated by the enormous amount of seafood available everywhere. I really love typical Nigerian breakfasts, very light and nice,” he said.

Wale Ojo-Lanre, Director-General of the Ekiti State Bureau of Tourism, expressed his enthusiasm about the UN team’s visit and the potential for great tourism development in the state.

He commended Governor Biodun Oyebanji for his support and highlighted the visit as a promising step towards enhancing Ekiti’s tourism industry.
