26-year-old Adegoke Oluwatomisin Dorcas has been arrested by the operatives of the Zone 2 Command of the the Nigeria Police Force and brought before the Igbosere Magistrate’s Court in Lagos, for allegedly obtaining N65m from 13 importers under false pretence.
The police alleged that the defendant allegedly collected the money from the complainants with the promise to help them exchange the money for the Chinese yuan.
The police said the defendant failed to exchange the money as promised but converted it to her use, and then became unreachable.
The police further alleged that following the development, the complainants petitioned the Zone 2 Command, Lagos. The Command deployed and investigative team led by an Inspector Taiwo Abass . They succeeded in arresting Dorcas from her alleged hideout.
She was slammed with a three-count charge bordering on obtaining money by false pretence, fraud and stealing.
Police prosecutor Ibrahim Haruna, an Area Superintendent of Police, told the court that the defendant committed the offence between July and December, 2023 in Lagos.
Haruna informed the Court that the defendant tricked the complainants and lied to them that she was in a position to exchange the N65m with the Chinese yuan.
The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charges and the presiding magistrate, B.A Sonuga granted her bail with two sureties in like sum.
Sonuga adjourned the case till 8 October, 2024 for mention and ordered that the defendant be detained at the Kirikiri correctional facility, Apapa, Lagos till she perfected her bail conditions.
