The Edo State Government has commissioned a 1-megawatt solar power grid in Ohovbe community, Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area.
The project was commissioned by the Edo State Deputy Governor, Engr. Marvellous Omobayo.
Speaking at the event, the State Commissioner for Mining and Energy, Dr. Ojiefoh Enaholo, disclosed that over 2000 houses in the community would enjoy 24 hours electricity from the solar grid.
He stated that the project was in line with Governor Godwin Obaseki commitment to stable electricity for residents.
Enaholo recalled that similar projects had been inaugurated at Eyean community, while others at the Military Hospital in Benin City and the Irrua Specialist Hospital would soon be commissioned.
He said: “Edo people have suffered epileptic power supply and exorbitant estimated billings.
“The electricity law was on the exclusive list at the time. But in 2022, Governor Obaseki explored the law which empowered States to generate and use power for its facilities.
“That move gave birth to Ossiomo power plant in Edo. Former President Buhari then passed the law for States to generate power and sell. And President Bola Tinubu begun the implementation,” he added.
The Commissioner noted that the ongoing solar power projects in the State would boost economic activities in the respective communities, served the under-served and unserved households.
