A swift-thinking off-duty police officer has brought a serial predator to justice after catching him “upskirting” a woman at the British Museum.

According to Met Police, Jake Verano Gomez, 33, was sentenced to four months in prison and ordered to pay court fees after pleading guilty to recording an image under clothing without consent.

The officer’s quick action led to the discovery of multiple videos of other victims on Gomez’s phone, filmed on the same day.

Detectives are now urging women who think they may have been targeted to come forward and seek help.

Gomez, a Colombian national, was apprehended on Monday, August 19, after the off-duty officer noticed him taking the video.

The victim was supported by museum staff and Met officers, who arrived promptly to take Gomez into custody.

Detective Constable Holly Wright said these offences had a devastating impact on women and girls.

“Fortunately, our colleague’s presence meant Gomez was brought to justice. We now believe there may be more victims who are unaware they were filmed.

“If you were at the British Museum on August 19 around 2 pm, please come forward and speak to us,” he said.

The Met Police said Gomez would also have to register with the police for up to seven years under the Sexual Offences Act 2003.

The Police added that the swift action by the City of London Police officer and the subsequent investigation by Met officers had ensured that Gomez has been held accountable for his actions.
