Onyeka Onwenu, popularly known as the “Elegant Stallion,” has been laid to rest today in Lagos.
Onwenu, who died on July 30, 2024, at the age of 72, had collapsed at an event honouring the Managing Director of Emzor Pharmaceuticals, Dr. Stella Okoli, and was later pronounced dead at Reddington Hospital, Ikeja.
The funeral service, which took place at the Fountain of Life Church in Ilupeju, Lagos, was attended by a host of dignitaries, reflecting the huge impact Onwenu had on the nation.
Among the notable attendees were former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, and the Governor of Abia State, Alex Otti.
Following the church service, a private burial was held at a vault in Ikoyi, attended by close family and friends.
She was not only celebrated for her numerous hit songs but also for her contributions as a broadcaster, actress, politician, and activist.
Onwenu is survived by her two sons, who, along with other mourners, honoured her wishes expressed three years ago.
The veteran singer had requested that her life be celebrated with prayers, joyful moments, and laughter, urging her loved ones to mourn her passing but not excessively.
