A former officer of the Metropolitan Police, Mark Tyrrell, 55, has been charged with multiple serious offences following an investigation by the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC).
According to the Met Police, Tyrrell was formally charged on Tuesday, 13 August, with two counts of rape, eleven counts of sexual assault, four counts of sexual assault by penetration, three counts of perverting the course of justice and one count of misconduct in public office.
He is scheduled to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, 4 September.
The Met Police said Tyrrell previously served as a police constable in the Parliamentary and Diplomatic Protection Command before retiring on 8 September 2023.
He was arrested in April 2023 while still an active officer, as part of an investigation conducted by the Metropolitan Police’s Directorate of Professional Standards.
Following his arrest, he was immediately suspended from duty.
The allegations were referred to the IOPC on 18 April, 2023, and an independent investigation was initiated by the IOPC on 24 April, 2023.
