Suicide suspected as 300-level UNILAG medical student dies

A 300-level medical student of University of Lagos, UNILAG simply identified as Williams has died just ahead of the the school’s examination scheduled to commence today.

The cause of the death of the student at the College of Medicine of the University of Lagos (CMUL) was still unknown.

But the provost of the college, Professor David Oke, a professor told Premium Times that the student may have decided to take his life due to pressure of the impending examination.

He based his suspicion on the fact that some colleagues of the student had reported that he posted a cryptic message, such as ‘goodbye,’ before he was found dead.

The Provost, who described the death of the student as shocking said the management of the College will conduct an autopsy on his remains after a meeting with his parents today, Monday

“As of now, we cannot authoritatively say, this is the cause of the death but a suspicion that it could be suicide, but no definite conclusion yet.

“They are supposed to start exams tomorrow (Monday), and some of his colleagues mentioned that he had posted a cryptic message, such as ‘goodbye,’ which they didn’t interpret as a red flag at the time,” he said.

The Association of Medical Students University of Lagos (AMSUL) has also confirmed the passage of the students in a chat in their WhatsApp group.

The message reads: “Dear AMSULites, It is with great sadness that we share the news of the recent passing of a beloved AMSULite in the Genezens class

“As we navigate this difficult time, we encourage everyone to keep the departed and their family in your thoughts and prayers. Please reach out to your classmates, and friends, especially those in the Genezens class, and offer your support.

“Let’s stand together, showing compassion and care for one another during this challenging period.”
