Security guards charged with N61m theft in Lagos, remanded in Ikoyi Prison

The Police at Maroko Division, Lekki, Lagos, have arrested three security guards employed by the Lagos Fencing Club for allegedly stealing aluminum fencing materials valued at N61 million.

The suspects reportedly converted the proceeds for personal use.

The suspects, Bullum Ayim (38), Gabriel Edet (31), and Samuel Nkanu (33), were said to have conspired to steal the property they were hired to protect.

n They allegedly fabricated a story claiming that thieves had broken into the premises to steal the aluminum, a claim the police described as false.

The employer, upon discovering the theft, reported the matter to the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in charge of Maroko Division. The DPO immediately directed officers to arrest the suspects.

The three men were charged at the Igbosere Magistrate’s Court, located at the Tinubu Magistrate’s Court complex, Lagos Island, on two counts of conspiracy and stealing.

Prosecuting counsel, Inspector Ejima Okete, informed the court that the theft took place between 1st and 28th August 2024 at 6, Olunda Adedoyin Ogungbe Street, Lekki.

Inspector Okete emphasized that the suspects had violated the trust their employer had placed in them as security guards.

The charges against them are in accordance with sections 287 and 410 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

The accused pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Magistrate B.A. Sonuga granted them bail with two sureties each in like sum and adjourned the case until 8th October 2024 for mention.

Meanwhile, the defendants will be remanded at the Ikoyi Correctional Facility until they meet their bail conditions.
