Borno Govt begins water decontamination as Maiduguri flood recedes

As floodwaters in Maiduguri gradually recede, the Borno State Government has commenced decontamination efforts to ensure public health safety.

This initiative comes in the wake of widespread flooding that affected several parts of the city.

The Borno State Commissioner for Information and Internal Strategy, Prof. Usman Tar, disclosed the decontamination efforts in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday.

He emphasized the government’s commitment to reducing the risk of disease outbreaks resulting from the flood.

“We are taking measures to decontaminate the water and to reduce the risk of diseases,” Prof. Tar stated.

He added that some corpses had been evacuated from affected areas and cautioned residents to avoid consuming contaminated water.

The commissioner urged the public to promptly report any cases of infection or disease outbreak to the relevant authorities for swift intervention.

“We are also setting up medical centres in the camps to provide immediate response to public health challenges,” Tar explained, while appealing for calm.

“I want to appeal to the public to continue to remain calm and peaceful as government and other stakeholders are working towards ensuring their safety and welfare.”

Several dignitaries have visited Maiduguri to sympathize with the state government and its residents.

The Nigerian Governors’ Forum, led by its chairman, Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazak of Kwara, paid a visit.

Other notable visitors included the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Abdullahi Umar-Ganduje, National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, and several ministers.
