The Association of Private Practicing Surveyors of Nigeria (APPSN), a subgroup of the Nigerian Institute of Surveyors (NIS), has underscored the urgent need for effective enforcement to combat the widespread issue of quackery in the surveying field.

Addressing attendees at the 2024 Annual Professional Workshop and Luncheon, themed “The Practice of Cadastral: Understanding The Technicalities, Ethics, Market Dynamics, Policies, Innovation/Reforms, Value-Added Services, and Its Politics,” APPSN members called for a unified approach to uphold ethical standards and integrate technology to enhance cadastral practices and service quality.

Guest lecturer Olumide Adewebi emphasized the importance of avoiding sharp practices that could damage the profession’s reputation.

He pointed out that surveying is a highly competitive field and urged practitioners to move beyond habitual undercutting and agent signing.

Adewebi stressed the need for improved training, education, and regulatory measures to address quackery and ensure a sustainable and profitable cadastral practice.

In his opening remarks, Ibikunle Adaranijo, Chairman of APPSN’s Lagos branch, highlighted the workshop’s objective of equipping professionals with the latest knowledge and insights in cadastral practice.

He appealed for collective action from all stakeholders to eradicate quackery and reaffirmed the association’s commitment to this cause.

“We are steadfast in our fight against quackery,” Adaranijo stated. “Our weekly radio programme on Radio Lagos continually addresses this issue, and our efforts are already showing results. We are also tackling unethical practices, as demonstrated by the recent suspension and ongoing trial of surveyors from the Office of the Surveyor General for misconduct. We remain dedicated to educating, training, and retraining our members to keep pace with industry developments,” he said.

The APPSN remains resolute in its mission to elevate professional standards and combat malpractice within the surveying industry.
