The Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Christopher Musa, has assured voters in Edo State of a free, fair and credible governorship election scheduled for Saturday.

Speaking at strategic meetings with stakeholders and troops in Benin on Wednesday, Musa revealed that this directive aligns with the mandate given by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Musa emphasized that the military would uphold professionalism as they collaborate with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to ensure a violence-free election.

He warned that anyone attempting to disrupt the poll would face severe consequences.

“My message from Abuja is one of peace and assurance that we will conduct ourselves professionally during the election,” Musa stated.

“The election must be free, fair, and credible; anyone with intentions contrary to a peaceful election will face repercussions.”

He reiterated that the armed forces would not tolerate unauthorized individuals carrying arms and stressed that only statutory security agencies are permitted to be present during the election.

Musa also cautioned local security networks and vigilantes to stay away from election duties, emphasizing that intimidation of the electorate would not be tolerated.

He advised all deployed personnel to avoid compromising their integrity.

“Any personnel who compromises will face the consequences,” he warned.

“Our role is to provide a secure environment for voters and support INEC, which is responsible for conducting the election. The police are the lead agency for security, and our actions will support their efforts to ensure a free and fair election.”

Musa commended the troops for their readiness and dedication, noting that their hard work often goes unrecognized.

He encouraged them to continue their efforts and work as a cohesive unit with other security forces, including the police, Civil Defense, and DSS.

“We aim for this election to be the most peaceful ever in Edo State. This is the President’s mandate,” Musa affirmed.

“The President has no favorites; his preference is for the candidate chosen by the people of Edo, and our duty is to ensure this process is carried out fairly.”

He also announced restrictions on movement during the election and banned convoys or individuals carrying weapons.

Musa assured the troops that their welfare and allowances would be properly managed.
