In a decisive move to tackle ongoing traffic violations and congestion across major highways and busy intersections, the Lagos State Taskforce executed a comprehensive enforcement operation on Wednesday in Obalende and Oworonshoki.
The action targeted the disruptive practices of commercial bus operators that have significantly increased travel times for all road users.
During the operation, 56 vehicles were seized, and seven individuals were detained for obstructing justice.
Led by CSP Adetayo Akerele, Chairman of the Agency, the taskforce said those arrested would face legal proceedings in court.
The operation is part of an ongoing initiative to restore order on Lagos roads and eliminate the disruptions caused by commercial vehicles.
Despite numerous warnings to commercial drivers, particularly those contributing to traffic gridlocks in key areas, the issues have persisted, severely affecting commuters and residents.
Akerele reiterated the Agency’s strict zero-tolerance policy towards traffic rule violations.
He stressed that the enforcement is intended to ensure a smooth and safe travel experience for everyone in the metropolis.
During the operation, tensions flared when a commercial bus operator resisted the impoundment of his vehicle, resulting in an altercation that left one officer injured.
The officer is currently receiving medical care, and the assailant has been apprehended.
“We remain steadfast in our mission to restore order to Lagos roads. The safety of road users is paramount, and we will continue to enforce traffic laws rigorously,” Akerele asserted.
The Lagos State Taskforce plans to extend its enforcement efforts across other areas of the State, aiming to curtail traffic violations and enhance road safety.
The Chairman urged all drivers, both private and commercial, to adhere to designated pick-up and drop-off points to avoid vehicle impoundment.
“Maintaining order on our roads is a shared responsibility. By following the rules, you set a standard that encourages others to do the same,” he appealed.
