American singer and actress, Lady Gaga, has opened up about her decision to stay silent on longstanding rumours that she is transgender.
In an interview with Variety, the pop icon revealed her reason for choosing not to address the rumour.
Gaga explained that she avoided responding to the rumours to prevent reinforcing the idea that being transgender is something to be ashamed of.
“I didn’t feel like a victim with that lie,” she shared. “I thought: What about a kid who is being accused of that and would think that a public figure like me would feel shame?”
The singer stressed her empathy for young people who may face similar accusations and reflected on how public figures can influence perceptions of such topics.
“I’ve been in situations where fixing a rumour was not in the best interest and the well-being of other people.”
Lady Gaga recently made headlines by announcing her engagement to her French boyfriend, Michael Polansky. The singer credited her mother for introducing her to her fiancé.
