President Bola Tinubu has urged Edo State governor-elect, Senator Monday Okpebholo, to prioritise the development of the state, assuring him of full support from the Federal Government and the Progressive Governors’ Forum (PGF).
Tinubu made the call during a meeting with the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Abuja, where the Edo governor-elect and his deputy, Dennis Idahosa, presented their certificates of return.
Highlighting the importance of good governance, Tinubu emphasized the need for results-driven leadership in Edo State.
“Governor-elect, the task of development lies before you, and we are here to support you. Work closely with the progressive governors of the APC; they are truly committed to progress. Learn from them, and I believe you are well-prepared for this role,” Tinubu stated.
Acknowledging the complexities of democracy in Nigeria, Tinubu noted that the challenges of governance are not unique to the country.
“Democracy is difficult, particularly in emerging democracies like ours, but it remains the best form of government,” he said, adding that Senator Okpebholo and his deputy represented a strong partnership ordained to work for the people.
Tinubu also praised former Edo State governor, Senator Adams Oshiomhole, and the APC leadership for their efforts during the election.
He specifically commended the security agencies and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for ensuring a peaceful and well-organized election in Edo, with no reports of violence.
“The election was conducted without bloodshed or riots. People voted and returned home peacefully, and any lingering fears quickly dissipated,” Tinubu remarked.
The President further encouraged the APC leadership to remain united in achieving the Renewed Hope Agenda.
He reiterated the significance of local politics and praised the electoral outcomes in various Edo senatorial districts.
Speaking on the heavy rain during Election Day, Tinubu commended the commitment of voters who braved the weather without using umbrellas, symbolizing their dedication to the party.
APC National Chairman, Senator Abdullahi Ganduje, echoed Tinubu’s sentiments, lauding the leadership and support from the President, governors, and stakeholders.
Ganduje noted that the APC’s next focus is securing victories in the forthcoming gubernatorial elections in Ondo and Anambra, emphasizing the party’s goal of expanding its presence in the Southeast.
“The election in Anambra is part of our program to politically de-marginalize the Southeast. Having only two APC states in the Southeast is insufficient; we need more,” Ganduje concluded.
