The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) in collaboration with the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) has issued a warning to communities in Imo State to prepare for potential flooding.
This alert follows a joint inspection of Oguta Lake and the Orashi River on Friday, where water levels are gradually rising.
The inspection, carried out by NEMA’s Owerri Operations Office alongside NIWA, aimed to observe the increasing water levels and assess preparedness for a proactive response to possible floods.
During the tour, the team urged local residents and stakeholders to evacuate to higher and safer grounds as a precautionary measure, while adhering to all flood-related warnings from authorities.
Although the inspection showed a minimal rise in water volume, NIWA desk officer Mr. Onwuasoanya Chimaobi highlighted a rapid increase in water levels in nearby Iberu, Anambra.
He warned that the Imo area could soon see accelerated flooding, calling for standby boats to ensure the swift evacuation of people, especially those working in farm camps.
Chimaobi also predicted that October 15 may be a critical date for flood risks in the region, cautioning that the water could surge significantly by then.
Representatives from NEMA, NIWA, the Boat Operators Association, Marine Police, and the Dredging and Miners’ Association participated in the monitoring exercise, emphasizing the need for readiness in the face of impending floods.
