The demolition of Crystal Mall, owned by APC chieftain and Wakilin of Ilorin, Hon. Mashood Mustapha, has taken a stunning turn with the resignation of Mustapha’s brother, Bar. Akeem Usman Mustapha, SAN, as Chairman of the State Education Trust Fund.

This development is reportedly linked to the ongoing dispute between Mustapha and Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq over the failed contract for Kwara Hotel’s renovation.

According to Sahara Reporters, the controversy began when the contract, initially awarded to Mustapha’s company, Crystal Group, was revoked and reassigned to Craneburg Construction Company for ₦17.8 billion.

Tensions escalated in May when the government demolished the mall’s fence and adjoining shops, citing encroachment on the state Secretariat Complex’s setback. Mustapha denied the allegations, claiming the action was politically motivated.

On October 7, shop occupants were given a three-hour notice to vacate the complex before its complete demolition. The government alleged the structure deviated from approved plans, intended for a car park for state civil servants and pensioners.

Bar. Akeem Usman Mustapha’s resignation, effective October 7, did not explicitly state reasons, but its timing suggests a connection to the conflict. Notably, Mustapha has made significant contributions to the state’s development, particularly in sports and education, including renovating the state stadium’s main bowl and upgrading Ikhiwanudeen LGEA Primary School in Ilorin.

This incident raises important questions about the impact of political disputes on governance and public interest. The people of Kwara State eagerly await further clarification on the matter.
