The Lagos State Government has urged artisans to adopt a proactive approach to safety and foster a culture of safety within their practices.

This call to action was made by the Director General of the Lagos Safety Commission, Lanre Mojola, during the opening ceremony of the Nigerian Artisans and Technicians Conference (NATCO) 2024 in Lagos.

Themed “Innovation! Innovation!! Innovation!!! Key to Sustainability in the New Economic Reality,” the conference took place on Tuesday and highlighted the importance of collaboration among various government tiers as well as the significant contributions of the organization across sectors such as automotive, fashion, construction, and trade.

“Our primary mission at the Safety Commission is to protect lives by preventing accidents that can lead to injuries or fatalities,” Mojola stated, emphasizing the urgent need for a safety-first culture.

He referenced statistics from the International Labour Organization (ILO), which estimates that approximately 395 million accidents occur globally each year, with nearly three million resulting in fatalities.

This data, he said underscores the ongoing challenges in safeguarding workers health and safety worldwide.

Mojola encouraged participants to take proactive measures, including seeking insurance, utilizing personal protective equipment (PPE) during hazardous work, and prioritizing regular health checks to maintain well-being.

“Leadership commitment and active participation in safety are essential. We must cultivate a culture of ‘See it, Speak it, Sort it,'” he added.
