Despite the passage of the Special Peoples Law aimed at fostering an inclusive society for individuals living with disabilities, a prominent disability foundation in Lagos has called for an immediate end to the ongoing crises in Nigeria.
In a letter addressed to President Bola Tinubu and the governors of all 36 states, including the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), the Coordinator of the Kehinde Oshilaja Foundation, Kehinde Oshilaja highlighted the detrimental impact of the current unrest on vulnerable populations.
“When two elephants fight, it is the grass that suffers,” Oshilaja noted, emphasising the urgent need for action.
The foundation cited ongoing conflicts between the federal government and organised labour, along with the unresolved issues surrounding petrol prices, as critical examples of the turmoil affecting everyday citizens.
Oshilaja stressed the importance of prioritising the well-being of all Nigerians, saying that “It is imperative that stakeholders uphold democratic principles to prevent further unrest. I call upon President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, all 36 state governors, and the FCT Minister to urgently address the plight of individuals living with disabilities, who are disproportionately affected by these crises.”
Furthermore, Oshilaja insisted on the necessity of an independent, impartial, and accessible judiciary for all citizens.
The foundation lamented that people living with disabilities have nowhere else to turn and should not be forced to endure a battleground within their own country.
