The Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has announced that the Massey Children’s Hospital, set to be the largest and most advanced pediatric hospital in Sub-Saharan Africa, will be completed by next year.
During an inspection of the construction site on Thursday, Sanwo-Olu assured residents that the state’s flagship children’s hospital, located on Lagos Island, would soon be fully operational to cater to the health needs of children across the state.
Expressing satisfaction with the progress of the work, the governor stated, “We are on track, and we believe the hospital should be nearing completion by next year. All major civil works will be done by the end of this year, allowing us to begin extensive finishing.”
He added that the hospital’s multi-level car park had reached its required height, with only one more floor and a helipad remaining to complete the structure.
Reflecting on the project’s progress since its groundbreaking less than two years ago, Sanwo-Olu emphasized, “We promised to build the biggest pediatric hospital in Sub-Saharan Africa at a single location, and you can see the magnitude of the work being done. The contractors have made significant strides.”
Highlighting the significance of the new hospital, the governor explained that the current Massey Children’s Hospital, which is nearly 100 years old, needed to be replaced with a modern facility that would stand the test of time.
“This new structure is designed to last for centuries. It’s a promise made, and it’s a promise we are keeping for the benefit of the residents, particularly mothers, fathers, and children on Lagos Island,” he said.
Sanwo-Olu reiterated that the project is part of the state’s commitment to building world-class healthcare infrastructure.
“We are ensuring that the facilities we put in place will outlive us and be comparable to any major healthcare center across Africa and the world,” he said.
