The Edo State Police Command has confirmed the killing of a middle-aged man, Abdulrafiu Afegbua, by unidentified gunmen.
It remains unclear whether the killing is connected to cult-related activities.
The incident took place in Awoyemi community, Okpella, located in the Etsako East Local Government Area of the state.
Afegbua, who was at home with his wife that night, reportedly received a phone call summoning him to a location.
Despite his wife’s attempts to dissuade him from leaving at such a late hour, the unsuspecting victim hurried out of the house to meet his caller.
Upon reaching the agreed location, Afegbua was ambushed and fatally shot in the chest and neck by the assailants.
After hours passed with no word from her husband, Afegbua’s distressed wife repeatedly called his mobile phone, but her calls went unanswered.
A search party was formed the following morning, and they discovered Afegbua’s lifeless body in a nearby bush, not far from where his motorbike was found abandoned on a path.
The Edo State Police Command spokesperson, SP Moses Yamu, confirmed the incident, stating that investigations are currently ongoing.
