Former Governor of Delta State, Dr Emmanuel Eweta Uduaghan, celebrates his 70th birthday today, 22 October, 2024.

Uduaghan has been on the political scene for decades. He has now joined the Setuagenarian club. Below are 10 key facts about him

1. Uduaghan was born on 22 October 1954 to Chief Edmund and Mrs Cecilia Uduaghan of Abigborodo, in Warri North Local Government Area of Delta State.

2. He attended Baptist Primary School, Mosogar (1961–1966), and Government College, Warri. He then pursued tertiary education at the University of Benin (UNIBEN), where he trained as a Medical Doctor between 1975 and 1980.

3. During his National Youth Service in Kwara State, Uduaghan was recognised as the most outstanding medical doctor in his service year.

4. He distinguished himself while working at the Delta Steel Company (DSC), Ovwian-Aladja, earning the General Manager’s prize for Outstanding Service.

5. He served as Secretary of both the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Warri branch, and the Association of Private Medical and Dental Practitioners, Warri Zone.

6. His political journey began during the 1992 National Assembly elections, when he mobilised support for his cousin, Chief James Ibori. Although Ibori lost, he praised his technical expertise.

7. In 1999, Uduaghan, a founding member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Delta State, was appointed Commissioner for Health under Governor James Ibori.

8. In 2003, he became Secretary to the State Government during Ibori’s second term.

9. In 2007, Uduaghan succeeded Ibori as Governor of Delta State. His eight-year tenure saw significant transformations, notably the establishment of top-tier health facilities, including the state-of-the-art Oghara Teaching Hospital.

10. He is married to Roli Nere Uduaghan, and they have two children: Toritseju Uduaghan, Founder/CEO of Oroju Nigeria Limited, and Orode Meyiwa Uduaghan, Delta State Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs, Community Support Services, and Girl Child Development.
