Barcelona’s teenage prodigy, Lamine Yamal, has won the Kopa Trophy, awarded to the best young footballer, in recognition of his exceptional impact on Spain’s Euro 2024 victory.

His stunning goal against France in the semi-final stands among the highlights of his breakout performance.

The prestigious award was presented by Dutch football legend Ruud Gullit, the 1987 Ballon d’Or winner, following a tribute montage showcasing Gullit’s illustrious career achievements, including Champions League and European Championship titles.

Yamal emerged victorious from a pool of top young talents, with nominees including Pau Cubarsi (Barcelona, Spain), Alejandro Garnacho (Manchester United, Argentina), Arda Guler (Real Madrid, Turkey), and others. The ceremony, held in France during the Ballon d’Or event, celebrated Yamal’s rise in the football world.

A brief technical issue occurred as Yamal accepted his award, disrupting the translation of Didier Drogba’s questions.

However, Gullit intervened, commending Yamal’s maturity and future potential: “I think he’s very mature in the way he plays. He has a huge future and will win many trophies. We need players with his kind of talent who aren’t afraid to dribble. This is what we miss.”

With this win, Yamal is firmly positioned as one of football’s brightest young stars.
