Afrobeats singer, Oyinkansola Sarah Aderibigbe, also known as Ayra Starr, has addressed the comparison between her and her South African counterpart, Tyla.
The youngsters attracted comparisons online after they were both nominated in the maiden Best African Music Performance category at the 66th Grammys.
Addressing the comparison for the first time during an interview with BBC Radio 1 Xtra, Ayra Starr said she’s not letting the comparison affect her relationship with Tyla.
She described the South African diva as her “home girl” and her “G.”
She said, “Tyla is my homegirl, that’s my G. That doesn’t bother me at all. I don’t care about all of that. Less noise, more music.
Let’s support each other, like, why not, like Afrobeats and African music is about to take over the world and we have to come together to be able to do that. There’s no need for comparisons.”
Ayra Starr who recently dropped her album ‘The Year I Turned 21’, became a viral sensation after releasing her hit track ‘Bloody Samaritan’ in 2021.
The same year she released her debut studio album “19 and Dangerous” and it included her other chart-topping songs “Away,” “Rush” and “Bloody Samaritan,” which she later remixed with American singer, Kelly Rowland.
With numerous awards and accolades, Starr has become one of the continent’s fastest-rising artistes.
She was among the Nigerian music stars nominated for this year’s Grammy Awards.
“Rush” earned her a first Grammy nomination in the Best African Music Performance category, making her the youngest Nigerian female artist to be nominated for a Grammy Award in that category.
The music star, however, lost to Tyla, the South African singer.
