In response to a surge in violent crimes and kidnappings across Edo State, Governor Godwin Obaseki has ordered the Edo State Security Network (ESSN) to resume its regular operations.

This directive follows the suspension of the ESSN by the Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Kayode Egbetokun, just days before the 21 September governorship election.

The suspension was ordered after some ESSN operatives were implicated in the killing of Inspector Akor Onu, a security aide to Senator Monday Okpebholo.

Since the suspension, the state has witnessed a deterioration in security, particularly with an increase in kidnappings and cult-related violence.

According to a statement from Chris Nehikhare, the State Commissioner for Communication and Orientation, Governor Obaseki issued the directive after a State Security Council meeting on Monday, during which the recent spike in homicides and other violent incidents was reviewed.

“The government is committed to addressing the insecurity in the state, and the Edo State Commissioner of Police has been directed to restore law and order,” the statement read, reaffirming the state’s dedication to safeguarding lives and property.
