Popular Yoruba actress and filmmaker, Eniola Ajao, has revealed how fake news on social media drove her to almost poison herself.
The actress made this known while sharing her experience during her recent interview with Nollywood on Radio.
Narrating her experience with fake news, Ajao said she faced severe emotional distress that also led to her withdrawal from social activities.
“I almost poisoned myself because of news about me on social media that was far from true. It was the first time in my life to faced something so painful that I couldn’t eat for seven days. I didn’t go anywhere. People around me can testify to it.
“My sisters were calling, telling me, ‘You have to do this for yourself. You don’t have to poison yourself.’ My son was reaching out to everyone that I was struggling with the online lies.”
Ajao ventured into acting in 2004 in the Yoruba film ‘Igba Aimo’. She gained prominence while working with the Odunlade Adekola film productions.
In March, Ajao sparked controversy during the premiere of her film ‘Ajakaju’ — after Bobrisky, the crossdresser, was crowned “best-dressed female”.
The incident sparked outrage, leading Ajao to apologise in an interview with Arise TV and clarify that Bobrisky’s award was a publicity stunt. She later announced new winners for the category.
Ajao also explained that her team devised the idea to ensure the film garnered attention.
Consequently, they opted to present the Best Dressed Female award to Bobrisky, known for his controversial personality.
Ajao urged Nigerians not to fault Femi Adebayo, who merely presented the award and wasn’t involved in the judging process.
