Nigerians are making a strong case to take home the Grammy for Best African Music Performance at the 2025 awards, with some of the country’s biggest stars leading the charge.
Burna Boy, Yemi Alade, Asake & Wizkid, Tems, and the collaboration of Chris Brown featuring Davido and Lojay have all secured nominations in this highly anticipated category, which celebrates the sounds of Afrobeats, Afro-fusion, Amapiano, and other African genres.
Introduced in 2024, the Best African Music Performance category was created to acknowledge the growing global influence of African music, particularly the rise of Afrobeats.
According to Spotify, the genre has seen a staggering 550% increase in streams since 2017, revealing its international appeal.
In the inaugural year, South African artiste Tyla took home the award, but the spotlight for the 2025 Grammys is clearly on Nigerian talent. While last year’s nominees represented only three countries — Nigeria, Benin, and South Africa — with Ayra Starr being the sole Nigerian nominee alongside South African Tyla and producer Musa Keys, this year, Nigeria is dominating the category.
The presence of Burna Boy, Yemi Alade, Asake & Wizkid, and Tems among the nominees has stirred excitement and pride among fans, who are hopeful that the Grammy Award will finally come home to Nigeria.
With these powerhouse artistes leading the charge, the 2025 Grammys could make a change, ending the controversy of 2024 when many felt Nigerian artistes were overlooked in the newly established category.
